Helvetica Write Up.
Helvetica
- When text is used in different settings, it evokes different moods, such as when a fancy restaurant uses a cursive swirly font to say how fancy they are, or using Helvetica to add a feeling of simplicity on the New York subway. When I went to NY I liked looking at a good sans serif font and not some complex times new roman bullhonkey while on the subway.
- “Putting wires into our heads” is saying that by making designs, you’re using the image to convey a message, the message will vary, i.e. “Buy this!” or “Don’t do that!”
- When I work on a computer I most commonly use Times New Roman for school reports (mostly because I have to). And whenever I do anything else, I use Courier, because it has nice line spacing, so I can easily read large blocks of text.
- Legibility is the ability to read, and communication is understanding what you read.
- Before the 60’s, everything was all colorful and askew, and past then, it became all about simplicity and getting the message across.
- I like the grunge style of design, but if you overdo it, it just becomes a jumble of letters and words that isn’t legible. It’s a good contrast to all of the helvetica- esque stuff you see everywhere.
- If I spent enough time enjoying said companies product, I don’t think I’d care.
- I’ve spent too much time looking at font styles since you showed them in class, I hope I don’t spend any more time staring at random text looking for the stylization.

Typography Notes
Design Typography
Serif font is best for smaller text, Sans Serif is for bigger font.
LEGIBILITY
Choose classical, time tested typefaces (font)
SERIF Has little wingdings on the letters. SANS SERIF doesn’t.
Too many fonts will confuse a reader and spoil the aesthetic
Fonts that are too similar cause ambiguity and make it boring.
Use UPPERCASE and lowercase appropriately.
All caps = yelling, so do it for titles and stuff like that.
ALIGNMENT
Left alignment reads easiest. Consider eyeflow when designing your text. Middle align is good in some cases. Right align is weird.
EMPHASIS TOOLS 1. Italics 2. BOLD 3. Size 4. Color 5. Typestyle Change
INTEGRITY
Avoid stretching and distorting text to maintain integrity.
HEAVY AND LIGHT FONT
Strive for a sense of balance in text balance. Dont change it too much.
KERNING
Space between letters
Using kerning makes your letters more uniform.
TRACKING
The space between multiple groups of letters
RAGS
Large blocks of text. You want the edges of text to look more uniform.

Color Theory Write-Up
Color Theory Write-Up
Primary Colors:
Red Yellow Blue OR Red Green Blue
Secondary colors are created when two primary colors are combined, i.e. Red + Blue = Purple.
Tertiary colors are created when two secondary colors are combined, i.e. green and orange combine to make a color that I have absolutely have no idea what its called.
Subtractive and Additive color models
Light generated colors add color when combined.
Pigment generated colors subtract color when combined.
Color affects our perception of depth depending on whether it’s dark or light, dark colors regress while light colors advance towards the viewer.
Shade and Tint
When black is added to a color, it’s called a shade, it makes it dark. When white is added to a color, its called tint and makes it lighter.

File Formats
Lower-end Quality
LOSSY
For the best quality, the .PNG is much better, but it's not as compact, and .JPEGs are good for the lossy images. I really don't have a lot of preference as long as its not like a few of the .GIF files in this list.
